Scan Smart Technology reveals a link to coccidiosis.

On a Farm visit north of Cork city a group of maiden heifers were presented as the client was failing to detect heats in this group where collars were being used as an aid for heat detection.

In the group of 40 heifers all except 2 heifers were cycling, 1 was prepubertal and the other was a free martin. In those heifers that were cycling we identified 4 heifers for AI today, 1 which was presenting no signs of heat, 1 that had been AI’d on the basis of activity monitoring with an accelerometer 48 hours earlier and 2 animals that were on heat based on the smart scan system and concurring with the activity monitoring using the accelerometer.  Of the remaining heifers we identified a group of animals which were not detected in heat in the previous 6 days and remaining animals were coming on heat over the next 72-hour period or mid cycle.

In this group of animals an interesting feature was an abnormal uterine condition in one third of animals presented. This concurred with the client’s own records that these heifers were treated for coccidiosis as calves.

Therefor there is an association between previous experience and subsequent fertility which is critically important in terms of survivability of your heifers into the future if they experience a stressor in early development
