Identifying twins in cows proves very beneficial
23 Jan 2020On a farm visit to Flan Enright in Ballynacally Co Clare. Flan informed me that we had identified 6 cows carrying twins in his herd of 40 suckler cows last year. All cows carrying twins had twins. The fact that he used ScanSmart from ReproDoc ensured that he had accurate aging of pregnancies and accurate identification of those cows carrying twins.
He knew these cows required extra attention. He ensured these cows were weaned early from their calves and given the attention prior to calving in terms of nutrition and in around the time of calving in terms of the risks associated with calving difficulty.
He was delighted with the outcome because twins in cows normally results in poor survival rates of cows and calves subsequent to the twinning experience.
