Heritability of twins in a dairy herd

On a visit to a dairy farm in County Cork, where a client presented cows for reproductive assessment. Multiple ovulations, twins, and triplets were a common feature in 1 cow family. This trait resulted in embryonic death, metabolic problems associated with twin births, and an increased calving to pregnancy interval. The client concluded that he would have to stop the breeding progeny from this cow family, when we diagnosed embryonic death, in a maiden heifer which was part of the same cow family.
