Sex Semen might be the only option to remove Friesian bull calves from the production system on animal welfare basis in the future.
06 Dec 2019On a farm visit in Co Derry this week a client revealed that of the first 97% cows that calved he had 86 Friesian heifer calves. This is in his opinion created many advantages – opened the window for use of Friesian AI.
Pre breed scan conducted each year identified does cows that were not suited for use of sex semen and now uses beef straws on these cows. He is achieving targeted 90% correct sex on calves born to sex semen leaving the % of Friesian bull calves on first 8 weeks of his calving season as minimal.
He is less risk of calving difficult in his maiden heifer using sexed semen. He can convert over to use of beef semen at earlier stage in the breeding season and this adds value too his sales of calves on the farm
