Scanning cows is an excellent procedure to improve heat detection rates

Pre-Breed scans of Autumn calved dairy herds has revealed very poor heat detection rates in the past week. This has been associated with cattle being overcrowded indoors and being fed poor quality silages with insufficient concentrate supplementation to balance the need of the cow. This has resulted in poor estrus and increased the number of anestrus cows.
