Impact of TB in dairy herd management in Northern Ireland

Farm visits to scan cows in both County Tyrone and Derry, reveal an inordinately high incidence of TB. This has resulted in many herds being locked up. In 1 case scenario it was their first breakdown in 50 years farming. This has resulted in the retention of stock on farm, which would normally have been sold, in particular Holstein bull calves. The situation was made more difficult by the fact that it is uneconomical to feed Holstein bull calves, spaces are at a premium on these farms, and farm labour is limited.
