False positives in AI between 10 & 20%
Visited two dairy farms in County Kerry where tail paint and activity monitoring systems were used respectively. On both farms, we detected cows that were pregnant but served at a date more recent to the date that they were diagnosed pregnant. This situation should not arise on farms but in a strenuous effort to maximise the number of pregnancies achieved in a given window of opportunity, farmers are over zealous in their approach to cows that need to be A.I.\\\’d. Both the tail paint and the activity monitoring systems resulted in false positives. Between 10 & 20% of the cows served were bring done at the incorrect time.
