Identical twins are quite rare
This set of identical twins were born on the farm of Alan & John Dwyer near Dundrum Co Tipperary today. They were born 3 weeks prematurely but thankfully are alive and well.
SmartScan technology from ReproDoc identified this set of identical twins in early pregnancy. A management programme was put in place to aid survival. Identical twins arise from the splitting of the single embryo. Identical twins are high risk pregnancy as both calves must develop in the one uterine horn. This increases the risk of premature calving, embryonic death or abortions.
In this case, the client extended the dry cow transition period and managed the cow nutritionally from the prospective of having twins. As a point of interest, identical twins will have the same area of coat colour but the pattern of same may vary.
