Undetected in heat in a Spring breeding programme
On a farm visit a client presented a large group of cows which had not been detected in heat in a Spring breeding programme. It transpired that a high percentage of the cows not detected in heat were pregnant! A stock bull was running with the Autumn calving herd and the freshly calved Spring cows resulting in a number of cows establishing pregnancy. This had never happened to the client previously even though the same practice pertained. However, this year he had changed his management practices in that the quantity of concentrates fed to the cows had increased dramatically, thereby enhancing the number of cows maintaining body condition and resuming normal oestrus cycle.
