Underlying stressors must be identified and removed before super ovulation programmes in cattle

On a call in Tulla Co Clare, we identified a Charolais cow which had underlying stressors preventing the opportunity to harvest embryos using superovulation and embryo transfer.

This cow is foundation female for this elite Charolais herd. We identified that the cow was now suitable for a superovulation programme. Previous ScanSmart assessments by ReproDoc revealed underlying stressors preventing satisfactory outcome from a superovulation programme.

This client rectified the underlying stressors and yesterday it revealed that the cow was reproductively sound and suitable to start a superovulation programme.

It is essential that cows entering superovulation programme to harvest embryos for embryo transfer are assessed prior to and during superovulation programme. This is on basis on expense associated with the superovulation and embryo transfer, the risks to subsequent fertility of donor cow following the superovulation programme and finally the expense associated with semen to be use in superovulation programme.
