Scanning reveals the importance of scanning post calving
On a farm visit outside Dromore, Co. Down we scanned cows which calved between 14 and 40 days previously. We used this data to assess herd health management in the dry cow period. Scanning revealed severe trauma among cows calved 14 to 28 days previously. This was associated with failure to include dry cow minerals specified for management of this herd in the dry cow section, for a 1 week period, corresponding to the time these cows were 1 to 2 weeks pre-calving. This reveals the importance of mineral supplementation as specified for a high production type dairy cow.
