Scanning maiden heifers reveals the impact of poor housing and nutrition

On a farm visit a client had synchronised a batch of heifers on 2 separate occasions. He introduced a stock bull out of frustration 14 weeks after he started his breeding programme, less than 50% of his heifers were in calf greater than 23 days. Body condition of these heifers was very poor. Some of them had reverted back to a deep anoestrus state. The heifers were housed on slatts which impairs reproductive performance. He would not feed ration because the price of soya bean was so expensive. Short term savings, will definitely result in long term costs and reduce the longevity of his herd.
