Scanning cows reveals the value of selected strains of dairy shorthorns
On a farm visit outside Brosna, Co. Kerry I scanned a herd of shorthorn cows for a client who previously had a pedigree holstein herd. He had reduced the number of pedigree holsteins and introduced a line of pedigree shorthorn cows, introduced from the UK market. He showed me cows which have peaked at 8 gallons of milk and achieved a pregnancy rate last year in their first lactation, with 9 straws used to inseminate and 8 pregnancies established to first service. The shorthorn cow would have excellent survivability and excellent health status relative to other dairy breeds.
