Scanning cows reveals impact of poor body condition score
On a farm visit outside Tralee, Co. Kerry, we had to scan a herd of cows based on a pre-scan for autumn calving cows and a pregnancy scan for late calving spring cows. The pre-scan revealed that none of the cows calving from October to November were cycling. This concurred with the poor body condition score encountered in the cows. The farmer was feeding fodder beet in the diet but insufficient protein. Unfortunately this resulted in excessive body condition loss in cows with a high genetic potential for milk.
