Scanning cows reveals another reason for the use of sex semen

Breakdowns with TB have increased dramatically in the north of Ireland. This has resulted in herds being locked up with no opportunity to sell bull calves. Holstein Bull calves have very little monetary value with calves making between £5 to £10 each. It does not make any economic sense to feed these bull calves £2 of milk a day. Farmers have resorted to the use of sex semen to produce heifer calves, thereby reducing the risks associated with the Holstein bull calf.
