Scanning a suckler herd reveals maiden heifers being bred below target weights
Scanned a suckler herd outside Kilrush, Co. Clare using Dr. Dan’s USART technology revealed cows which were not cycling, associated with previous calving difficulty, suckling effects and lameness. The nutritional status based on body condition score was good.
The stock bull was running with this herd. The herd also included a group of maiden heifers weighting between 250-350 kilos, over 50% of these heifers were in calf. This will create problems in terms of calving difficulty, and performance of the 1st parity cows. My advice to the client was to separate out his in calf heifers and feed them a high protein calf ration for the next 3 months.
