Mycotoxins will cause severe impairment of uterine involution

Scanning cows in Bushmills, Co. Antrim revealed that uterine involution was severely impaired in a large group of freshly calved cows. The client informed me that this group of cows had experienced a setback with moulds in silage during the dry cow period. A number of cows slipped pregnancies and after calving had severe setbacks with retained afterbirths and severe infections. Reproductive assessment revealed that body condition score in the majority of cows was between 2.5 and 2.8. However, the cows had infections. In conclusion, dry cow management has to entail the supplementation with excellent silage while maintaining body condition score.
