Early on-set of puberty results in unwanted pregnancies

On a farm visit in Kilkenny, a client presented a suckler herd and weanling heifers which were crosses.  The client was worried that the weanling bulls were left with the weanling heifers between four and seven months of age.  There were 14 Belgian Blue cross heifers in the group and of these, six were pregnant between 30 & 60 days.  From a management perspective, this needs to be addressed particularly where Belgian Blue crosses are in the herd.  The males and females need to be separated from three months of age onwards.
