€5000 penalties for breaches of slurry spreading in the close season

Two slurry spreading contractors & two farmers have been issued with €5000 fines each for spreading slurry in the close season. This is a warning to farmers that spreading slurry during the close season will not be tolerated. With land currently saturated because of persisted heavy rain for the past number of months, run-off from land after spreading slurry will result in significant deterioration in biological oxygen demand of our waterway.

We need sensible approach to the application of a very valuable resource to our land and avoiding the risk of deterioration of our water quality. We need to ensure sufficient slurry storage capacity and dirty water capacity on our farms to enable a sensible approach to management of our ecosystem.
